Hailey wasn't especially happy with Kona's performance... or more like Becky's riding performance. The only reason he lost was because she had him about ten lengths too far out in front of the Tidal Wave and hadn't bothered to slow him down when he started showing signs of slowing; it wasn't technically tiring. It was more like immaturity. The skewbald had gotten a bit frisky being so far out in the front alone. He started just messing around and waited for the other horse to catch up rather than trying his hardest to win. By the final furlong of the race, Tidal Wave was on Kona's tail and when Becky finally asked him for a bit more, he was taken by surprise and didn't kick into another gear until Becky laid the whip on him but by then it was too late. Tidal Wave took the race flew by at the same moment as she whipped Kona. Kona pinned his ears back and dug in after him but he was just a fraction too late. At the end of the race, Becky had a hard time pulling him up as he fought for the lead once again. Becky tried to reason with Hailey, knowing for a fact that Kona wouldn't allow a horse to pass so easily after that loss, but Hailey wasn't too willing.
Becky felt guilty for the loss but she also didn't want to push the two year old too hard and hesitated to whip him until she felt it was necassary. She felt torn though knowing that if it had been any other two year old she would have whipped them harder. Perhaps it was because she liked Kosoku so much that she hadn't wanted to hurt him; how stupid of her. She probably hurt him and his record more than she could have ever done by just taking the time to whip him a couple of seconds earlier... or even just making sure that he stayed right in front of Tidal Wave and no farther.
"I don't care how much you appologize, you can't take back the loss you caused Kosoku!" Hailey walked swiftly into the tack room and searched around aimlessly, with Becky right on her tail. "I know... It's just... I really want to stay on him and prove that I can ride better. I'd really hate it if I lost the chance to ride him." Hailey paused, thinking it over. She grabbed a handful of racing tack along with Kosoku's halter. Hailey had at first decided that Michael was going to ride him instead of Becky. She really wanted to give her another chance though, because Becky loved that colt so much. She whipped around with the tack and fled out the tack room store, "Fine. One more chance. That's all." She turned to look at Becky before putting all of the tack in the saddling area. She handed the halter to Becky however, "Go get him." Becky nodded and walked to the two year old barn eagerly.
